Mission statement: ![]() Anna Maria Dwyer, founder At a young age Anna was inspired by many things - music, ballet, sports, to name a few. She grew up in San Jose, California where she attended a mega church from a very young age. Everything at church was done as if it was professional and was often televised. Anna sang in many different choirs, played oboe in the orchestra and started accompanying choirs at age 11. She sang her first vocal solo when she was eight years old. Anna enjoyed singing a small role in a Christmas production for 3000 audience members, a full orchestra and a large choir (and animals!). From then on, she actively participated in her church's music program. One of her favorite activities was being in a cover band. She learned how to sing many different styles of pop music and play keyboard at the same time. It was an incredible learning ground for becoming a musician. While at university, Anna developed a special relationship with an amazing Steinway concert grand piano. Not having more than three years of formal training, she learned that piano playing had many more facets to it than she ever thought possible. Anna greatly enjoyed being focused on her studies as a music major. While studying classical music, she was involved in different grunge bands with friends and wrote original songs on the guitar. It was an era of moshing, crowd surfing, and singing in a way that was rather hard on the voice. Anna did a lot of that at the time and now is not doing that so much! She was also the music director for chapel services that were held twice a week. She really liked sharing her music with just over a thousand students and felt at home on the stage. Anna loved the energy that often came out of a room full of people sharing many amazing moments. This energy, or electricity, is something that Anna hopes to perpetuate. Since her background is so diverse, she has much to offer others. Education programs are in development right now and MAA intends to bring in people that not only know their field well and can teach it, but also are active performers. Think of it as "on the job training"! Please contact Music Arts Alive if you have interest in joining us at any level - professionally on the stage, administratively, financially, or in one of our classes. We'd love to hear from you.
